Former ambassador says the West needs 'dose of reality'
EU foreign ministers have introduced fresh sanctions against Syria in an attempt to stop the violence against protesters.
They include a freeze on the assets of Syria's central bank.
Security forces are continuing to bombard the city of Homs and appear to have widened their attack.
BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast spoke to Sir Andrew Green, a former British ambassador to the country. He said that Westerners needed a reality check to understand the situation.
