Assad's speech to the Syrian nation sparks fresh protests

In Syria people have taken to the streets again tonight, bitterly disappointed by the president's refusal to end decades of emergency rule.

The televised speech by President Bashar al-Assad had been keenly anticipated, however he failed to announce any political reforms instead accusing Syria's enemies of organising a 'conspiracy' against national unity.
