Calm returns to Rio favela after riots

23 April 2014 Last updated at 18:07 BST

Relative calm has returned to the central Rio de Janeiro favela, or shanty town, that was rocked by violence between locals and riot police.

The protests broke out on Tuesday following the death of a young man allegedly beaten by police.

The BBC's Wyre Davies has been into the Pavaozinho complex to see the damage and assesses the government's controversial pacification programme in those communities.
