Over 100 gay and lesbian couples have taken part in a mass civil marriage ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
In 2011, Brazil's Supreme Court recognised same-sex civil unions and now 14 out of the country's 27 states have legalised same sex marriage.
But gay marriage is still condemned by religious groups and hate crimes against gay men and women have been on the rise.
