Pope Francis visits Rio shanty town

25 July 2013 Last updated at 20:00 BST

Pope Francis has visited a poor community in the city of Rio de Janeiro during his visit to Brazil, on his first foreign trip as Pontiff.

Security was tight in Varginha, part of the larger Manguinhos favela, an area recently pacified after being blighted by violent crime in the surrounding area.

Julia Carneiro reports from Varginha, as the Pope gave a blessing to the community.
