Violence breaks out in Chile's capital Santiago

Violence has broken out in the Chilean capital Santiago after hundreds of protesters from the indigenous Mapuche community targeted two Spanish banks.

About 200 activists marched to mark the five-year anniversary of the death of Matias Catrileo Quezada, a young Mapuche student who died after being shot during clashes with the police in a land dispute in southern Chile.

Protesters threw rocks and petrol bombs, in response police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In recent years, the Mapuche, famed for their resistance to Spanish conquerors five centuries ago, have renewed their ancestral land demands in a series of clashes with police and private businesses.
