Mexicans join Pope Benedict XVI for Mass

Pope Benedict XVI has held an open-air Mass in the central Mexican city of Silao on his first visit to the Latin American country.

Hundreds of thousands of people attended the service, under a large statue of Christ in the city's Bicentennial Park.

The BBC's Will Grant says that the event was very important for Mexican Catholics at a time when the church is "haemorrhaging numbers".
