Chile's government has issued a red alert and ordered the evacuation of villages within 45km of the Hudson volcano.

Clouds of steam and smoke have risen up to 5km into the air.

The Southern Andean Volcano Observatory said seismic activity related to the volcano started to increase on Tuesday.

The volcano lies 995 miles (1,600km) south of Chile's capital, Santiago.

Liliet Heredero reports.
