Jersey collision van driver released after police questioning

A van driver who was questioned by police about a fatal collision on Victoria Avenue in Jersey has been released pending further inquiries.

Motorcyclist Sam Slater, 25, died in hospital after the crash with a van on St Helier's seafront.

The collision happened on Victoria Avenue, near the Grand Hotel, at about 19:15 BST on Monday, a Jersey police spokesman said.

The road was closed for four hours while police examined the scene.

Mr Slater's motorbike collided with a flatbed vehicle close to the hotel, a police spokesman said.

He was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Philip Ozouf, Jersey's Treasury Minister, tweeted to say he was "very sorry to hear of tragic death of a young Jerseyman on the Esplanade. Sincere condolences to his family and all those close to him".
