Death crash accused has 'left Jersey'

Police believe a man due in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving has fled Jersey using a false name.

Jose Joao Santos Silva, 21, was reported missing by friends on Saturday.

Officers believe he left for France on the previous Tuesday, 15 July, and has made his way to Portugal.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Vitor Fernandes, 22, was killed in a car crash on Victoria Avenue at First Tower on 30 December.

Mr Silva is due to appear in court on 1 August on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the Victoria Avenue crash.

In a statement, police said: "It is now believed he [Mr Silva] used a false to name to travel by boat to France on Tuesday.

"Investigations suggest he has travelled to Portugal or Madeira."

Jeronimo Vieira Santos, 29, and Luis Carlos Alves Cardoso, 19, are also charged with dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

The case has now been referred to the court which has responsibility for issuing an arrest order.
