A handgun that went "missing" from an unlocked car on Friday in St Helier has been recovered, according to Jersey Police.

Ch Insp Alan Williamson said the Glock 9mm pistol was handed in by a man late on Monday after a media appeal for its return.

He said "We are very grateful it has been handed in, we just wanted to make sure it was safe."

Officers will now investigate why the gun was left in an unlocked vehicle.

'Foolhardy'

Mr Williamson said: "As a firearm certificate holder, owning a firearm is not an automatic right, it is a privilege and there are responsibilities on the holder, and one of those is keeping it secure.

"Keeping it in an unlocked vehicle is foolhardy at the least."

The 9mm Glock disappeared from a silver Mitsubishi car somewhere between the Newton & Newton gun store and Roberts Garage in St Helier.

Police said the weapon was not loaded and no ammunition was missing.
