A large fire has destroyed the main building at a former holiday village in Jersey.

Five fire engines and more than 20 firefighters were called to the Plemont holiday village site in St Ouen at about 06:00 GMT after the fire was spotted by nearby residents.

The fire service said crews managed to contain the blaze and stop it spreading to other buildings on the site.

They were to remain on site for the rest of the day, it added.

Roads were closed in the area to keep it free for emergency services.

The fire service said the structure was not safe enough for crews to enter and they were contacting the owners to get permission to demolish some of it to make it safe.
