Jersey States vote down move to block police station

An attempt to block plans for a new police station at Green Street has been defeated by Jersey States members.

Deputy Judy Martin objected to proposals to build the new headquarters at the St Helier car park site.

She argued the loss of an estimated 91 parking spaces - plus increased demand for spaces from police staff - would affect businesses in the area.

However, States members decided by 29 votes to 19 to reject her attempt to block the development.

Extra spaces

The Department for the Environment will now determine whether the £21m project goes ahead.

Its examination of the plans was delayed while a scrutiny panel looked at the parking implications.

Its report estimated the total net loss, allowing for increased demand from police staff, could be as high as 177-191 spaces.

However, during debate Assistant Treasury Minister Deputy Eddie Noel promised extra spaces would be built if the development went ahead.

The new development has been designed to accommodate all police services, which are currently run from four different locations.
