'Only 9% are signed up' as organ donors in Jersey

Only 9% of Jersey's residents are registered as organ donors, according to a General Hospital consultant.

Neil MacLachlan said people were dying because not enough of the island's 98,000 residents were signed up to the local organ donor register.

He said every year there were about 20 patients waiting for a transplant.

He said: "We want to at least bring Jersey from 9% up to what it is in the UK which is 30% and even that isn't very good."

He said the NHS was hoping to double that figure.

Jersey Deputy Montfort Tadier has said he would welcome the "opt out" system which the Welsh government was looking at.

The proposed system would mean everyone is assumed to be a willing organ donor when they die, unless they state otherwise.

At the moment in Jersey you have to register your name on a local donor scheme if you are happy to donate your organs after death.

Deputy Tadier had previously said the demand for organs "far outstrips" those donated, but if Jersey adopted the opt out system, more organs would become available for transplants.
