A record number of people were unemployed in Jersey for the third month in a row, according to latest figures.

The States Statistics Unit showed 2020 people were registered as actively seeking work in Jersey at the end of January.

That was 180 more than December and 320 more than the same time last year.

One in five people out of work had last worked in the retail, wholesale, motor repairs or the sales sector.

The figures also showed that people who had been unemployed for more than a year made up a sixth of the total, while 320 teenagers aged 16-19 were out of work.
