More asking Jersey's Citizens Advice for debt help

More people are contacting the Jersey Citizens Advice Bureau over debts.

In 2012, it helped 278 people with debts totalling £5,058,000 - the previous year 262 people had problems with a total debt of £2,857,000.

Malcolm Ferey, the chief executive of Jersey's Citizens Advice Bureau, said the amount of debt had been falling until this "blip" in 2012.

He said it had been caused by two or three really large cases.

But he said: "I'm sure the increases in energy bills are going to affect people's pockets."

It was announced on Friday gas prices would rise by 3% and Jersey electricity prices rose by 9.5% at the beginning of the year.
