Plans for a new village near Jersey's Town Park have been put forward.

Property company Le Masurier wants to develop an area in front of the Freedom Centre and the former Odeon cinema, through to Funchal Street and towards Minden Place.

It said the plans included affordable homes, a green lane with restaurants and shops, and a pedestrian and cycle route into St Helier town centre.

A public consultation into the plans is open until 27 August.

The plans aimed to link the north of town with its markets, library and arts centre, Le Masurier said.

Planning minister Bob Duhamel welcomed the project as a "pretty good idea", saying it would improve central town living.

He said: "We've all been working towards a regeneration project which begins to give people the opportunity to live again comfortably in the middle of the town."
