Former Jersey politician Stuart Syvret could be in the running to be an Olympic torch bearer.

A space is available after Ralph Mauger stood down following charges of indecently assaulting children.

Mr Syvret was named on the London 2012 website as one of the 16 torch bearers who will carry the flame around Jersey.

A spokesperson for Locog said background checks needed to be made before it could give Mr Syvret the honour.

Mr Syvret lost his seat as a Senator in the States of Jersey after he was absent from the island for six months from October 2009.

He came second in a by-election in June 2010 to Francis Le Gresley and failed in a later election bid in 2011.
