Disability working guidelines drawn up at Jersey conference

Guidelines are being drawn up to advise Jersey bosses on employing people with a disability.

Local employers and their staff are helping to develop a good practice guide during the Jersey Employment Trust's Able to Work conference.

More than 150 people were expected to attend the conference at the Hotel de France on Thursday.

Jersey does not yet have an anti-discrimination law, so the document would be the first of its kind.

The Jersey Employment Trust's executive officer, Jocelyn Butterworth, said having the Good Practice Guide specific to Jersey will be a real advantage to employers.

She said: "There are many examples of good practice in Jersey which will be used within the guide and employers can gain advice and support from supported employment services such as the [Jersey Employment Trust], as well as other employers who have been in a similar position.

"Furthermore gaining feedback from the employees with disabilities themselves will open up greater awareness of how this untapped workforce can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive society as a whole."
