Residents opposing more building in Les Quennevais in Jersey have said the area is already built-up.

A petition against the sale of land in the Clos des Sables area to private developers has been set up.

St Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier said the four plots identified are valuable green space in an already built-up area.

Assistant Treasury Minister Constable John Refault, said selling the land would help first-time buyers.

Constable Refault of St Peter said that it would also help pay for "much needed" extra parking in Les Quennevais.

Breathing space

He said: "From my simple perspective at the moment, I see it as a win win.

"We are offering further housing opportunities for young couples and at the same time it is creating more parking in the estate as well."

Deputy Tadier said the space was used by residents: "They provide an open space both physically and psychologically in the estate, a breathing space if you like.

"They are used from time to time, particularly when there are activities going on such as the Royal Wedding celebrations."

Deputy Tadier has launched a petition against the development plans.
