The flypast ahead of the opening race of the meeting in Norfolk included a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber and an RAF Tornado GR4.

An RAF Reserves Honda Superbike - raced by Andrews in the series this season - and a 1999 European Superstock Championship-winning GR Motorsport Suzuki belonging to Harris were also positioned on the starting grid.

Mr Higgs added: "This weekend the championship reconvened following the six-week break occupied by the major road racing events, which claimed the lives of Simon and Karl.

"They were both hugely popular and accomplished riders who competed at the highest level in our series for more than a decade, and this is the first opportunity for us to pay tribute to them in a unique and fitting way.

"Our thoughts continue to be with all their families, friends and team members."
