Girl, 10, dies in Isle of Man car crash

A 10-year-old girl has died in a car crash on the Isle of Man.

Alexis French died when the car she was in was involved in a collision with a bus travelling towards Port Erin, at about 15:40 BST on Saturday.

The crash happened on the Castletown Bypass, near the junction with the Ballkaighen Straight, police said.

Alexis's father and younger brother are critically ill in hospitals in the north west of England. Her mother is in a stable condition in Nobles Hospital.

Six people on the bus were also taken to hospital.

'Popular girl'

Five people were released after treatment, but one remains in Nobles Hospital with fracture injuries, police said.

The section of road between Castletown and Port Erin was closed for about six hours following the crash.

Alexis was a year six student at Ballaugh Primary School.

Head teacher Dr Graeme Cushine, said she was a popular, bright and hard working pupil who had many friends.

"She loved learning, both inside and outside the classroom and was a school librarian", he said.
