Isle of Man bin project to combat beach litter

A volunteer beach cleaning organisation in the Isle of Man is appealing for funding for a new community project to combat coastline litter.

Beach Buddies plans to place bins and bags at various locations to encourage members of the public to collect rubbish from the island's beaches.

The scheme has received support from the government and now needs cash from private industry.

Organiser Bill Dale said firms could sponsor a bin for £1,000.

He added: "This is believed to be the first scheme of its type in Europe, perhaps the world, and with the support of the Manx public, we could eventually be able to throw down a challenge to the world and say that the Isle of Man is more litter-free than anywhere else on the planet."

Beach Buddies has already secured six bins but another 20 are needed.

Mr Dale said: "If the scheme works, it will be expanded to provide the same facility at car parks and access points to glens, footpaths, hill routes and the coastal footpath."
