A convicted paedophile has been deported from Guernsey following his release from prison.

Agostinho dos Santos de Sousa, 61, was jailed for 15 months in February on four counts of possessing indecent images of children.

The Royal Court recommended his deportation upon release and the Lieutenant Governor approved the order.

De Sousa was escorted to Madeira by two police officers and one immigration officer on Tuesday, said police.

On arrival Madeiran authorities arrested de Sousa on suspicion of committing sex offences against a minor.

Det Ch Insp Phil Breban said the charter plane cost £12,300 but police "had concerns over his temperament and didn't think it appropriate to escort him on commercial flights".

He added: "Obviously chartering a plane carried a significant cost, but that is unfortunately the price to remove individuals of this nature from our community."
