Guernsey police use court cells as overflow

Guernsey Police say they had to open up the court cells overnight to deal with an unusually high number of arrests.

Police said they arrested 14 people between 20:00 BST on Saturday and 01:00 on Sunday.

Arrests were for a range of crimes including assault, being drunk in a public place and thr suspected theft of a bike outside the police station.

Cells at the police station were full, so officers had to use the court as an overflow to cope with demand.

There are seven cells at St Peter Port police station and another six at the court building.

Six people were arrested in the Val des Terres for an alleged assault on a young male. They have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police say this is the first time they have had to use the court cells this year.
