A senior Alderney politician and Guernsey representative has died of a heart attack.

Paul Arditti, 62, served as a member of the States of Alderney after leaving the legal profession, in 2010.

He was one of two Alderney politicians to represent the island in the States of Guernsey.

He led the scrutiny committee and was known for his robust approach to a range of issues he was tasked with reviewing.

States of Alderney Chief Executive Roy Burke, said Mr Arditti had contributed a huge amount to public life in the island and his death was an "enormous shock".

He said: "I was talking to Paul on Friday and we exchanged emails only this morning. It comes out of the blue, it is extremely sad and Paul leaves a very big hole in the States of Alderney.

"There are very big shoes which are left and it will take more than one person to fill those shoes."

The police in Alderney are investigating but his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Mr Burke said it was too soon to discuss details of a by-election.
