Guernsey main road closures 'regrettable'

The closure of two main roads in St Peter Port in a week is "regrettable", says Guernsey's Environment Department.

Both Les Ozouets and La Gibauderie had to be shut this week, coinciding with telecoms firm JT's work in Le Rohais.

A spokesman for the department said Guernsey Electricity had caused 38 road closures so far this year, which was much higher than normal.

Dave Smart, electrical operations manager at Guernsey Electricity, has apologised for the inconvenience.

He said: "Guernsey Electricity works closely with the environment department and other utilities to plan the majority of work to the network undertaken on the island's roads to ensure minimal disruption to the travelling public.

"However, cable faults require emergency repair work to ensure electricity supplies are maintained, which can often conflict with and disrupt planned work.

"The number of cable faults tends to increase when the island is affected by wetter weather conditions and, with over one million metres of cable installed, faults of this nature do occur."
