Guernsey traffic sergeant says MoTs 'may help'

Guernsey could benefit from introducing an MoT-style system according to the island's traffic sergeant.

Six vehicles were taken off the road for being in a dangerous condition during the latest roadside fuel testing and vehicle safety checks.

Sgt John Tostevin said the consequences of drivers not having their vehicles checked could be severe.

He said 25 drivers were reported for offences as part of Operation Action that ran until 3 March.

Mr Tostevin said: "I would hate to be sitting here discussing the consequences if one of those vehicles' brakes had failed, bus stops full of people at rush hour.

"The consequences could be extreme due to somebody not getting their vehicle maintained before using it on the highway.

"The owners of vehicles with defects had to present their vehicle at the police station with problems resolved before taking it on the road. Between four and six vehicles were actually taken down to the tip."
