Super unleaded fuel to be withdrawn from Guernsey

Super unleaded fuel will not be imported into Guernsey from the end of March, Fuel Supplies CI has announced.

A company spokesman said the decision was prompted by crucial maintenance work at the St Sampson's Terminal, which was likely to take 12 months.

He said it was necessary to stop supplies of super unleaded to ensure the work could be carried out safely.

The spokesman said unleaded petrol and diesel supplies, which account for 95% of consumption, would be unaffected.

Currently the company is the only importer of super unleaded fuel.

The spokesman said there were plans to set up a group, representing fuel importers and distributors, which would aim to provide advice and support for motorists affected by the withdrawal.

He said: "Most cars on the island will not be affected and the withdrawal of high octane petrol has already occurred in other island communities with minimal impact on drivers."

The spokesman said there were also discussions about arranging one-off imports of higher octane fuel to support motorsport events and competitions.
