A fuel fire has wrecked a disused garage on Alderney and caused a cloud of thick black smoke above the island's main town.

Part of the disused Mouriaux garage on the outskirts of St Anne caught fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Alderney Fire Service and Alderney Airport Fire Service personnel were called to the blaze.

BBC's Robert Hall, in Alderney, said: "You could hear the sound of small explosions as the fire caught."

He added: "[The fire service] did deal with it very quickly and I would estimate that it was under control within half an hour or so."

He described the presence of "thick black smoke" above the island's town, and said the building had soon been "gutted".

Alderney Police confirmed at 17:30 GMT that the fire had been brought under control.
