Guernsey fishermen call for more security at quay

Mr Lane said something was needed to secure the area

Security needs to be increased at the Fisherman's Quay in St Peter Port, according to the President of the Guernsey Fishermans' Association.

It follows the theft of hundreds of Brown Chancre Crabs, weighing a total of 120kg (260lbs), from a pontoon.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the theft, which occurred sometime between 17:00 on Friday and 14:00 on Sunday.

Dougal Lane said access to the quay and pontoons should be restricted.

He said: "We've asked for security in the past, they've got security gates down at St Sampson's Marina, they've got electronic gates.

"Perhaps it's time access to the pontoons was restricted or perhaps electronic gates access to the quay, we definitely need something."

Guernsey's harbour master said added security was something that could be considered in the port's master plan.

The plan is being drawn up to decide the priorities for the harbours over the next 25 years.
