A Guernsey family has had a "lucky escape" after a tree fell against a house in St Martin.

Graham Neale heard a crash at about 04:30 BST and later told BBC Guernsey: "The tree struck the house, although the main impact was on my car."

The beech tree fell across La Route de Sausmarez from the other side of the road, which was closed until 09:30 BST.

Dave Brouard, the tree surgeon who cleared the site, said: "I think the house has had quite a lucky escape."

He added: "It's quite amazing, the way it came down straight between the gate pillars on the other side of the road."

Mr Neale said he was just relieved that none of his family were hurt.

He said: "There was a tremendous pulse of wind that came through at about that time. It was scary.

"I'm still in a bit of shock about it all. It sounded like the roof coming down."
