A former Guernsey pub is due to reopen at the end of the month as a youth centre.

The Caves de Bordeaux in St Peter Port was bought by charity Guernsey Youth in April 2008.

The group had hoped to raise the £800,000 needed and open it in 2009, but delays getting funding meant work did not start until February 2011.

The finished building will have a cafe on the ground floor and a chill-out area on the first floor.

Wayne Bulpitt, one of the charity's directors, said the final touches on the refurbishment will be done by the young people themselves, which gives them a sense of ownership.

He said: "By having that involvement we ensure the facilities that are there are what they want, which encourages them to use it and means they'll look after it."

The site in Upper Mansell Street was a pub or bar for more than 100 years and had fallen into disrepair before it was purchased by the charity.
