Pope Francis has met Meriam Yahia, the Sudanese woman who fled Sudan after being spared a death sentence for renouncing Islam.

The meeting, at his Santa Marta residence at the Vatican, was intended to show "closeness and solidarity for all those who suffer for their faith", according to the pontiffs spokesman.

Alan Johnston reports.
