German cave rescue of Johann Westhauser under way

16 June 2014 Last updated at 02:10 BST

A man who has been stuck in a cave underneath the mountains between Germany and Austria for a week is well enough for the rescue operation to begin, officials have said.

Johann Westhauser, 52, was badly hurt in a rock fall on Sunday 8 June.

He will be brought to the surface on a stretcher but it will be a slow process.

Wendy Urquhart reports.
