Ukraine crisis: Is Vladimir Putin repositioning Russia?

The idea of a resurgent Russia as a counter-balance to US power is becoming a theme of President Putin's third term in office.

But the country's oil and gas wealth means that many in Russia have much to lose from the international sanctions imposed over events in Crimea.
