A man has been shot dead in Dublin.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 40s, was shot a number of times at Gateway Avenue in Ballymun at about 08:45 BST on Tuesday.

The police said the shooting involved a lone gunman. Media reports suggest the gunman may have fled on a bicycle.

The victim was taken to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where he was pronounced dead. The scene has been preserved.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the shooting to contact Ballymun garda station on 01 6664400 or the garda confidential telephone line 1800 666 111.
