Straw dismayed by police corruption over Lawrence

Former home secretary Jack Straw has told MPs the revelations of police corruption around the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry are the most shameful he has heard in his 35-year parliamentary career.

Mr Straw was responding to Home Secretary Theresa May's announcement of a public inquiry to investigate allegations that Metropolitan Police officers lied and hid evidence.

The new report examined police behaviour after the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and subsequent efforts to prevent Sir William Macpherson's inquiry from establishing the truth.
