Live: Olympic torch spacewalk as Sochi 2014 Winter Games relay makes history

9 November 2013 Last updated at 13:50 GMT

The torch relay for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games has made history as the first Games torch to be taken on a spacewalk.

Flight engineers Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy are carrying the torch with them when they undertake the walk from their base at the International Space Station.

Olympic torches have been carried into space twice before, in 1996 and 2000, but the Sochi torch is the first to leave a spacecraft.

The Olympic flame will remain lit on Earth while the torch is in space.
