Michel Barnier on Merkel phone row: 'Enough is enough'

24 October 2013 Last updated at 14:14 BST

Veteran French European Commissioner Michel Barnier has told the BBC that "enough is enough" amid allegations that US security services monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone.

The US has insisted her phone is not being monitored now but has neglected to mention what may have happened in the past while Mrs Merkel has demanded a "complete explanation" of the claims.

He said: "Between friends, between allies, we need trust, we need confidence and I think this has been shaken for the past few months."
