Merkel: A safe pair of hands?

Angela Merkel is arguably the most powerful woman in Europe, and one of its most successful politicians.

In just over a week she will be up for re-election as Germans head to the polls.

Germany's strong economy and Mrs Merkel's reputation as a "safe pair of hands" has kept her approval ratings high, even after eight years in power.

She is now looking likely to gain another term as Chancellor.
