Irish politician Jonathan O'Brien has said he has been forced to pay property tax after Revenue Commissioners deducted the money from his salary.

The Sinn Féin member of parliament, who opposes the controversial new tax, had refused to pay.

However, the commissioners have now informed him the tax would be taken from his salary in six instalments.

Other politicians opposed to the property tax have had similar deductions made.

They include other Sinn Féin and independent members and senators opposed to the tax.

Thousands of Irish workers who have refused to pay the tax have also had deductions made from their wages.
