Irish police are excavating the rear of a house of a murdered former garda detective in the search for the body of another murder victim.

The search is taking place under the patio at the home of former detective John Kerins near Bailieborough, County Cavan.

He had been questioned about the disappearance of a neighbour, Gerard Daly nearly two years ago.

Mr Daly's disappearance is being treated as murder.

Mr Kerins, 49, was shot dead at his home in 2012 as he was watching television in the sitting room of his home at Cornaveigh near Bailieborough.

On Tuesday, two men were arrested in County Cavan in connection with Mr Kerin's murder.

The pair, who are in their 30s, are being questioned at Carrickmacross Garda Station in County Monaghan

Mr Kerins had worked in the fraud squad in Dublin.

He was medically discharged from the force in 2009.
