Long serving colleagues of Pope Benedict have been speaking of their surprise at his decision to resign.
Cardinal Jozef Tomko - who is not eligible to vote for the next pope because he is more than 80 years old - told the BBC's Matthew Price that the pontiff had made a courageous decision.
