Turkey opens direct talks with PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan

Turkey's conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, the PKK, has been going on for 30 years. Since the fighting began, the war has claimed around 40,000 lives and over the past year, this fighting reached a new peak.

In December 2012, the Turkish government authorised the start of direct talks with Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK, who has been held in an island prison off Istanbul since 1999.
