Silvio Berlusconi has begun campaign talks with leaders of his People of Freedom (PDL) party, ahead of expected elections in February.

Current Prime Minister Mario Monti announced plans to resign on Saturday, after PDL withdrew its support for his government.

Mr Berlusconi served three terms as prime minister, resigning in 2011 amid allegations of tax fraud and a sex scandal.
