As the anniversary of last year's protests in Moscow over the disputed parliamentary elections nears, what do you need to know about Vladimir Putin - who won a third term as Russia's president in March - and his relationship with the media?

Some argue that the Kremlin has broadcast a series of reports on state-controlled TV that deliberately branded the opposition as enemies of the Russian state.

They also point to government attempts to introduce restrictive legislature on the media - and specifically the internet - which they say is designed to crack down on liberal journalists and opposition activists' websites.
