Police in Madrid have used rubber bullets and batons to force back thousands of demonstrators, trying to break down a cordon around the Spanish parliament building.
Protesters were showing their anger at the government's strict austerity programme.
Next year's budget presentation is just two days away, and it is likely to contain even deeper cutbacks, in an attempt to end Spain's financial crisis.
