Irish police investigating the death of an eight-year-old boy in County Cork have confirmed they are now treating it as murder and have arrested a woman.

The body of Anthony Ward was found at his family home at Harrison Place, Charleville, on Monday.

He died as a result of asphyxia, according a post-mortem examination.

The woman, who is aged in her 40s, was arrested on suspicion of his murder on Tuesday afternoon. She is currently being questioned by garda detectives.

The Irish state broadcaster, RTE, said the woman arrived at Mallow Garda Station in County Cork in an unmarked garda car at 18:15 BST on Tuesday.

RTE reported that she was driven around the back of the building and "her head was covered as she entered the station through a side entrance".

It is understood the child had celebrated his eighth birthday last month, and had been due to return to school at Newtownshandrum on Monday.

His school uniform was found near his body.
