Galway home residents: 'unwashed'

Most residents of a County Galway nursing home went without a shower or bath for a month, a report has found.

The Owenriff nursing home in Oughterard was the subject of a recent closure order.

An unannounced Health Information and Quality Authority inspection in April 2012 found residents still in bed wearing filthy clothes.

The report showed residents did not have free access to water.

It also found poor infection control, scalding hot water in wash basins and medication errors.

Staff files lacked vital information including police vetting information and references.

Following the issue of the closure order the home was taken over by the Health Service Executive.
